The Ellicott is crafted by hand from more than ten pounds of solid American Black Cherry Wood. The Case is constructed from more than a dozen pieces divided into three separate moldings whose fit and finish are on par with the finest American made furniture you can buy today. The simplicity of maintenance free chiming electronic quartz movement (battery-powered) makes the Ellicott a Benjamin Banneker clock that you will display proudly on your wall for many years. Night Silencing Option and complete Volume Control ensure this clock will be perfect for any environment.
The Ellicott name is inspired by the famous Ellicott Family who established what is now known as Ellicot City, Maryland. When brothers Joseph, Andrew and John Ellicott moved to Maryland in 1772 they settled in the area where Banneker had lived his whole life. Banneker and the Ellicott Brothers developed a friendship and mutual admiration for each others talents and thirst for knowledge. Joseph Ellicott was also a clock and watch maker and a mathematical genius from all accounts so he and Banneker immediately formed a tight bond. Ellicott loaned Banneker his first books on astronomy and equipment which Banneker then used to become a master astronomer in an amazingly short amount of time. Just a few years later it was Andrew Ellicott who was instrumental in having Banneker appointed to the survey commission which would be responsible for the initial survey of the boundaries of a new federal district (which would become Washington D.C.). The Banneker and Ellicott names are intertwined in many ways so it is with great pride that we present the Chiming Ellicott Wooden Wall Clock by Benjamin Banneker.
